When people start looking for a company to digitize their old videotapes, the first thing they often compare is price.
You'll find services advertising VHS transfers for incredibly low prices. At first glance, they can seem like a bargain. But when you're preserving irreplaceable family memories, historical footage, or professional recordings, the quality of the transfer matters far more than saving a few dollars.

The Importance of Professional Playback Equipment
The quality of a digital transfer begins with the playback machine.
Professional VCRs and broadcast decks were designed to produce a much cleaner, more stable video signal than consumer machines. They track aging tapes more accurately, reduce playback errors, and often recover details that inexpensive machines simply cannot.
Many budget transfer services use inexpensive consumer VCRs because they're readily available and inexpensive to replace. Unfortunately, the quality of the final digital file can never exceed the quality of the signal coming from the playback deck.
Why a Time Base Corrector (TBC) Makes Such a Difference
One of the biggest differences between professional and budget digitizing is the use of a Time Base Corrector (TBC).
Analog videotapes naturally have timing errors due to the fact that playback in a mechanical process not an digital process like today video files. Even when new, VHS tapes never produced a perfectly stable video signal.
A professional TBC corrects these problems before the video is digitized by:
Stabilizing shaky or wavy images
Eliminating frame jitter
Correcting timing errors
Reducing flagging and horizontal distortion
Producing more accurate color
Delivering a signal that professional capture hardware can accurately record
Without a TBC, digitizing software is forced to capture an unstable signal, which can lead to dropped frames, image instability, and inconsistent color.
Simply put, a TBC is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a professional transfer workflow.

Not all digital files are created equal.
Many inexpensive transfer services capture directly into highly compressed formats. These smaller files are easier to store but permanently discard image information during the digitizing process.
Once that detail is lost, it can never be recovered.

require specialized playback machines that are becoming increasingly rare.
Many transfer companies simply don't own these machines and therefore cannot offer transfers from professional formats.
We maintain professional broadcast equipment specifically for these formats, allowing us to capture them correctly while preserving the highest possible image quality.
Metadata Preservation for Betacam
For compatible Betacam formats, we can also capture available tape metadata during digitization.
Depending on the original recording, this may include information such as timecode and other embedded tape data that can be valuable for professional editing, archival documentation, and production workflows.
This is a capability generally unavailable from consumer-grade transfer services.

While Apple ProRes is our recommended archival format, we also offer additional delivery formats that are native to many professional editing systems and production workflows.
